Lukashenka:'I Will Never Pressure The Media'

TEXT SIZE - +

Our Belarus Service uncovered an interesting video of President Lukashenka from 1994, when he was speaking as an opposition candidate prior to the presidential election, which he went on to win. In the video, he's speaking in Russian to a small private television station in Minsk.

Here's a choice quote:

"You see what is going on today at the state television -- lies, total lies! I don't want to blame the journalists who work there -- they are pressured.... The media are simply raped.... And I, if I become president, will never pressure [the media]."
