Blast Kills Four In Sofia

Sofia, 19 January 2004 (RFE/RL) -- A bomb exploded in the elevator of an office building in central Sofia today, killing at least four people and injuring several others.

The bomb destroyed large parts of the building, which houses an insurance company. No one has claimed responsibility for the blast and police refused to comment on possible motives.

Sofia has seen a series of explosions and assassinations over the past year and a half. Police say the incidents evidently are part of a fight for shares in lucrative businesses between crime gangs.
