Red Cross Urges All Sides In Iraq To Avoid Excess

Geneva, 8 April 2004 (RFE/RL) -- The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) today said it is alarmed by the escalation of violence in Iraq and urged all sides to avoid using excessive force.

In a statement, the ICRC also called on all sides to allow those wounded in the fighting to reach medical facilities. The ICRC said it is becoming increasingly difficult to provide basic services, including medical care, due to the clashes.

The agency said it has delivered urgently needed medical supplies to Baghdad, Al-Fallujah, Al-Najaf, and Al-Nasiriyah over the past few days, and is ready to provide further supplies.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
