civilians and eight police were wounded.
Kimmitt also said that a U.S. soldier will face a court martial on 19 May for abusing Iraqi detainess at a Baghdad prison. The proceedings will be open to the public.
"Relating to Abu Ghurayb, on [5 May] charges were referred against Specialist Jeremy Sivits to a special court martial empowered to judge a bad-conduct discharge. The three charges against Specialist Sivits are: conspiracy to maltreat subordinates and detainees; dereliction of duty for negligently failing to protect detainees from abuse, cruelty and maltreatment; and maltreatment of detainees," Kimmit said.
Earlier in the capital, a bomb ripped through a crowded marketplace, killing seven people and wounding many others.
Also today, militia fighters loyal to Shi'a cleric Muqtada al-Sadr clashed with British forces in the southeastern city of
Amarah.
In Basra, south of Amarah, three coalition soldiers were wounded in an explosion near their convoy.
