Kosovo Warned By EU Against Path Of Isolation

10 May 2004 -- EU External Relations Commissioner Chris Patten said today that Kosovo has to meet international standards of governance or face being treated as an outsider.

Patten told reporters in Pristina that respecting political and social benchmarks set by the United Nations would enable the province "to join the international community rather than being treated as a pariah, as an outsider."

Patten also urged the ethnic Albanian majority in Kosovo to extend friendship and tolerance to the Serbian minority in order to create a European-like community.

Patten said it is important that the majority held out what he called "a hand of friendship and toleration" to the Serbs.

He added that future foreign investment in Kosovo will depend on creating "a harmonious community" in the region.
