10 June 2004 -- China today strongly condemned the attack on Chinese construction workers in Afghanistan that killed 11 yesterday.
Chinese President Hu Jintao, on a trip to Eastern Europe, was informed shortly after the attack and is quoted as strongly condemning the "inhumane, brutal attack."
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said Hu urged the Afghan government and the UN mission in Afghanistan to carry out a thorough investigation and punish the gunmen.
Gunmen killed the 11 workers in northern Afghanistan after bursting into their compound and attacking them with automatic rifles.
Liu also said that the Chinese government and people will not yield to any terrorism.
In a reaction to the attack, the United Nations halted voter registration in the area for planned national elections and told staff to stay off the roads.
