Three U.S. Soldiers Killed In Iraq


16 June 2004 -- Three U.S. soldiers were killed and 25 people were wounded in a rocket attack on a U.S. base in the Iraqi city of Balad today.

The U.S. military said the wounded included two civilians. The attack 75 kilometers north of Baghdad was one of several violent incidents in Iraq today.

A roadside bombing in the western city of Al-Ramadi today killed several people.

In the northern city of Kirkuk, assailants shot dead a senior oil official.

In southern Iraq, sabotage attacks on pipelines have forced officials to temporarily halt oil exports.

U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz met with Iraqi interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi in Baghdad today to discuss security and political issues.

In Washington, U.S. President George W. Bush reiterated Iraq is likely to face continued violence in the near future but said Iraqi insurgents will eventually be defeated.
