Policemen Killed In Shoot-Out In Ingushetia

1 July 2004 -- Police clashed with rebels in the Russian republic of Ingushetia today, resulting in the deaths of three policemen, including a deputy police chief.

Three suspected rebels were also killed in the exchange of gunfire.

Police say rebels opened fire from a house in the central town of Malgobek, where police were searching for members of a group that carried out a coordinated series of deadly strikes in the republic on 21-22 June.

The coordinated strikes by several hundred rebels left nearly 100 people dead. Many of them were law enforcement officials.
