U.S. Releases French Suspects From Guantanamo Prison

27 July 2004 -- The French Foreign Ministry says the United States has handed over four French detainees from the Guantanamo Bay prison complex in Cuba.

The ministry said the French detainees are being flown to Paris and will be "repatriated" today. French officials said the suspects were to appear before an antiterrorism judge upon arrival.

The French Foreign Ministry said last month that the U.S. and French governments were working on plans to allow several French detainees at the U.S. naval base to return to France.

The suspects were among seven French men rounded up with hundreds of others by U.S. forces in Afghanistan more than two years ago. About 600 people are still detained at the Guantanamo prison.
