5 August 2004 -- U.S. President George W. Bush signed a defense bill today that provides an additional $25 billion dollars for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Bush said Afghanistan and Iraq were the "frontlines" in the war on terror.
"This bill provides $25 billion in emergency appropriations to support current operations in Afghanistan and Iraq -- the
frontlines in the war on terror," Bush said.
The total defense bill for the fiscal year that starts on 1 October is more than $417 billion. The measure includes nearly $78 billion for weapons purchases.
It also includes $10 billion for continued work on a national missile defense system.
