U.S. Air Strikes Reported In Baghdad's Al-Sadr City

22 September 2004 -- U.S. forces attacked suspected insurgent positions in Baghdad's Al-Sadr City neighborhood today.

News agencies are quoting reporters and witnesses as saying U.S. tanks, warplanes, and Apache helicopter gunships were involved in fighting in the Iraqi capital's main Shi'ite neighborhood.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

The U.S. military has conducted a number of operations in Al-Sadr City, home to followers of Shi'a cleric and militia leader Muqtada al-Sadr.

U.S. planes struck Al-Sadr City yesterday in an attempt to destroy roadside bombs and land mines strewn across the slum's streets.
