Iraq Donors Conference Continues In Tokyo

14 October 2004 -- Representatives from more than 50 nations and international organizations are concluding a donors conference today on the financial needs of Iraq.

Today's closed-door session in Tokyo is focusing on how trust funds operated by the United Nations and the World Bank can be made more effective, and how to ensure that contributions to the funds are effectively used for reconstruction projects.

Yesterday, Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister Barham Salih told the third meeting of the International Reconstruction Fund Facility that his country urgently needs more help from the world community.

Donor nations have pledged some $14 billion, but only a few hundred million dollars of that amount has been spent, primarily because of continued violence and security concerns.
