UN Group Sets Date For Abkhaz Talks

United Nations, 24 November (RFE/RL) -- A group of states seeking to facilitate the peace process between Georgia and its separatist Republic of Abkhazia has confirmed it will hold a meeting of senior representatives next month in Geneva.

The UN spokesman's office said today that the Group of Friends of the Secretary-General for Georgia will meet 13-14 December.

A statement from the spokesman's office said group members hoped to spur a resumption of dialogue between the Georgian and Abkhaz sides "to prevent instability and build mutual confidence."

But group members have acknowledged that the political dialogue will be stalled until Abkhaz leaders resolve their internal dispute over last month's presidential election. The group is composed of the United States, Russia, France, Britain, and Germany.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
