Ukrainian Presidential Candidates To Debate On TV


16 December 2004 -- Ukrainian presidential candidates Viktor Yushchenko and Viktor Yanukovich are due to face off in a televised debate next week.

ITAR-TASS quoted Svetlana Karasenko, deputy director of the Ukrainian National Television Company, as saying today that the debate will take place on channel UT-1 at 7 p.m. Kyiv time (UTC+2) on 20 December.

Campaign managers for both candidates have not given any details or confirmation of the debate.

Also, both candidates are scheduled to give separate appearances on national television. Yushchenko is due to speak on 22 and 24 December, while Yanukovych is due to speak on 21 and 23 December.

In other developments, Ukraine's parliament today approved the appointment of Volodymyr Stelmakh as governor of Ukraine's National Bank. Stelmakh headed the bank from January 2000 to December 2002.
