Mesic Wins Croatia's Presidential Vote

17 January 2005 -- Croatian President Stipe Mesic has won another term in office.

The state election commission said Mesic secured 66 percent of the vote in yesterday's presidential runoff. Deputy Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor trailed him with 34 percent. The results are based on 99 percent of the votes counted.

In the first round of voting two weeks ago, Mesic gained a clear victory but failed to secure an outright majority.

The 70-year-old Mesic is credited with putting Croatia on the road to European Union membership, expected in 2009.
