Australia Grants Asylum To Chinese Diplomat

8 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Australia has granted asylum to a former Chinese diplomat who has defected.

Chen Yonglin, a former political affairs consul, abandoned his post in Sydney and claims he could be jailed or executed if he returned home.

He has claimed that Beijing has up to 1,000 spies operating in Australia and that it has kidnapped critics and taken them back to China.

Australia and China have said the diplomat's asylum bid would not harm relations between the two countries.
