NGO's Former Director, Accountant On Trial in Uzbekistan

18 July 2005 -- Both a former director and an accountant from a U.S.-based nongovernmental organization went on trial today in Uzbekistan.

A representative of the Internews Network, Fyodor Kravchenko, told reporters that Khalida Anarbaeva and Olga Narmuradova could face up to six months in prison if convicted.

They were charged with illegal publishing and producing videos without a license. Internews, which trains journalists and supports open media worldwide, has denied the accusations.

The trial comes amid Uzbek authorities' continuing harassment of international nongovernmental organizations and independent journalists, particularly after the 13 May uprising in the eastern city of Andijon.
