No Claim Of Responsibility For Algerian Abductions

22 July 2005 -- There has been no claim of responsibility yet for the kidnapping of two Algerian diplomats in the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Officials said the chief of Algeria's mission in Iraq and another Algerian envoy were abducted yesterday by armed men in Baghdad's Mansour district.

It was the latest incident targeting foreign diplomats in Iraq in recent weeks. The Al-Qaeda group in Iraq earlier this month said it had kidnapped and killed Egypt's envoy to Baghdad and vowed more attacks targeting diplomats.

In another development, Iraqi Sunni Arabs have suspended their involvement with the committee that is seeking to draft an Iraqi constitution.

The Sunnis are demanding the launch of an international inquiry into the 19 July murders of two Sunnis who were involved in the constitutional process.

Iraqis are facing an 15 August deadline to complete the constitutional draft.
