Hundreds In Baku Rally For Fair Parliamentary Vote

23 July 2005 -- Hundreds of Azerbaijani opposition supporters rallied in the capital, Baku, today to call for November's parliamentary elections to be free and fair.

The demonstration was organized by the opposition National Democratic Party. Participants chanted slogans urging President Ilham Aliyev to guarantee free elections or step down from his post.

Aliyev took over the presidency from his father, Heidar Aliyev, in controversial elections in 2003. Following pressure from the West, the Azerbaijani president has recently begun to permit opposition protests.
