Russian Pullout From Georgia Continues

1 August 2005 (RFE/RL) -- The Russian military pushed ahead with the pullout of its equipment from Georgia, with a convoy of military vehicles expected to cross the Russian-Georgian border today.

The withdrawal began on 30 July and will gradually draw down the men and equipment from the two Soviet-era bases remaining in Georgia.

After long and tense negotiations, Russia this year agreed to close the two bases, by the end of 2008. The deal was a key victory for Georgia's Western-leaning President Mikhail Saakashvili.
