Montenegro Police Chief Shot Dead

30 August 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Reports say a top Montenegro police official was shot to death early today.

Investigative judge Hamid Ganjola said Slavoljub Scekic, who headed Montenegro's criminal-investigation police, was gunned down with two short bursts of automatic gunfire shortly after midnight near his home in the republic's capital, Podgorica.

Police launched a manhunt for the killer and have reportedly rounded up 20 suspects.

Scekic was the third high-ranking Montenegrin police official killed since 2000.
