Ukraine Leader Pledges To Fight Racism


President Yushchenko (file photo) 30 August 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko pledged today that his government would fight racism after a Jewish student was severely beaten in the center of Kyiv.

Yushchenko said in a written statement that he condemns racism and xenophobia in all of its forms. He called the incident shameful.

On the night of 28 August, a group of assailants attacked a 32-year-old student at a Jewish school in an underground passage in the center of the capital.

The victim was hospitalized with severe head wounds.
