Russia Publishes Noncombat Military Deaths


12 September 2005 (RFE/RL) -- The Russian Defense Ministry today published a list of noncombat deaths in Russia's military so far this year.

The ministry says that so far this year, 182 troops committed suicide, 183 were killed in traffic accidents, and 175 were killed in other accidents. Fourteen were killed by their comrades.

In all, the ministry says 662 Russian military personnel have died this year.

Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov recently pledged to publish monthly updates on noncombat deaths in the military.
