Talabani Meets Czech Premier

President Talibani (L) meeting on 4 October with Czech Premier Paroubek 4 October 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Iraqi President Jalal Talabani met Czech Prime Minister Jiri Paroubek in Prague today as he continues a three-day visit to the Czech Republic.

After their talks, Talabani and Paroubek said the transfer of power and security tasks into the hands of Iraqis is necessary before the country can fully stabilize.

Paroubek also said Iraq is interested in continuing a Czech military police training program.

Some 100 Czech military police officers are stationed in southern Iraq close to the Kuwaiti border, where they have been training their Iraqi counterparts.

On 3 October, after meeting Czech President Vaclav Klaus, Talabani told reporters he believes the 15 October referendum on the new Iraqi constitution will be successful.
