Former French Envoy Detained In Oil-For-Food Scandal

11 October 2005 -- French justice officials say that Jean-Bernard Merimee, France's former envoy at the UN Security Council, has been detained in connection to corruption in the Iraqi oil-for-food program.

French investigators suspect Merimee of having received bribes from the former Ba'athist regime in Baghdad.

Merimee served as France's ambassador to the United Nations from 1991 to 1995.
