Pakistan Relief Efforts Resume After Bad Weather

(RFE/RL) 17 October 2005 -- Helicopters today resumed relief operations to stranded earthquake survivors in the mountains of Pakistani-controlled Kashmir.

Heavy rains and thunderstorms had hampered relief operations on 15 October and canceled nearly all flights on 16 October.

Officials say that nearly 10 days after the earthquake, relief teams are yet to reach survivors in some far-flung areas. Medical teams and soldiers carrying emergency supplies were being sent on foot to some of the most remote villages.

Officials say the 8 October earthquake killed more than 53,000 people in northern Pakistan and Pakistani-controlled Kashmir -- the worst hit areas -- and warn that the death toll could rise.

Confirmation of a final toll will be difficult because many bodies remain buried under rubble.
