Council Of Europe Delegation Travels To Chechnya

(RFE/RL) 2 November 2005 (RFE/RL) -- A delegation from the Council of Europe is traveling to Chechnya today, RFE/RL's Russian Service reported.

Russian media say the delegation is visiting Chechnya to see for themselves the situation in Russia's restive republic, ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled for 27 November.

The delegation is led by Marc Franco, the head of the European Commission's mission in Moscow, and also includes the British and the Austrian ambassadors to Russia.

The delegation -- which is on a tour of the region -- visited North Ossetia on 1 November and is also expected to travel to Ingushetia.
