Russia To Search For Lost Radioactive Generators

(RFE/RL) 25 November 2005 -- The Russian Navy was searching for two isotope thermoelectric generators that fell into the Sea of Okhotsk eight and 18 years ago due to "technical failures."

On 24 Novermber, the Sakhalin Oblast legislature demanded Russia's Pacific Fleet remove the generators from the seabed.

The generators were intended to supply power to undersea beacons for ship navigation, but malfunctions aboard the helicopters carrying them caused the generators to be dropped away from their target areas in 1987 and 1997.

Navy divers still have not located the generators.

Russia's Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Protection Service said no threat of radioactive contamination of the water has developed.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
