Iraqi Prisoners, Guards Killed In Shoot-Out

(RFE/RL) 28 December 2005 -- At least eight people were killed in a shoot-out at a high-security prison in northern Baghdad today.

The U.S. military said in a statement that some 16 detainees had stormed the armory and seized a number of weapons.

At least four Iraqi prison guards and four prisoners were killed in the shoot-out that followed.

The military said the incident was an attempted breakout, but that none of the prisoners escaped.

Earlier reports suggested the death toll could be as high as 20.
