Turkish Police Arrest Pope's Would-Be Assassin

Mehmet Ali Agca at court in Istanbul, 12 January (ITAR-TASS) 20 January 2006 -- Turkish police in Istanbul have arrested the man who shot Pope John Paul II in 1981.

Mehmet Ali Agca was arrested shortly after a court overturned a decision that allowed authorities to release him from jail eight days ago.

The court ruled that Agca should return to jail for the killing in 1979 of a Turkish journalist and other crimes. He had already served time in Turkey for the killing.

Agca spent 19 years in an Italian jail after he shot Pope John Paul II.
