U.S. Restores Preferential Trade Terms With Ukraine

(RFE/RL) 23 January 2006 -- After a three-year break, the United States has reinstated preferential trade terms with Ukraine, citing Kyiv's recent efforts to improve protection of intellectual property rights.

Speaking in Washington, U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman praised the Ukrainian government for what he called its "sustained efforts" to crack down on copyright piracy.

Last July, Ukraine passed legislation strengthening efforts aimed at stemming the illegal production of CDs and DVDs. Ukrainian law enforcement officers have since conducted several raids against illegal disc plants.

Under the preferential trade system, the United States exempts thousands of products from tariffs.
