21 February 2006 -- U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice today said the Palestinian militant group Hamas must choose between terror and politics.
"You cannot have one foot in the camp of terror and the other foot in the camp of politics,” she said. “You have to renounce violence; you have to be willing to live up to the obligations that Palestinians have taken over the last more than a decade for a cooperative relationship with Israel and for a commitment to peace."
Rice made her remarks in Cairo after having talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit.
Rice arrived in Egypt today for a tour of the Middle East. She is due to visit Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates during her trip, which lasts through 24 February.
Rice is consulting with regional leaders on a broad array of bilateral and regional issues, such as Iran's nuclear ambitions, the political situation in Iraq, and the Palestinian territories.
