Britain Tells Berezovsky Not To Plot Against Putin

Boris Berezovsky (file photo) (ITAR-TASS) 28 February 2006 -- British Foreign Minister Jack Straw has warned London-based Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky not to plot against Russian President Vladimir Putin while Berezovsky is in Britain.

The warning comes after Berezovsky told Reuters earlier this month that he is working to overthrow Putin's regime.

Britain's Foreign Ministry said Straw warned Berezovsky that his refugee status could be reviewed if he continues to make such remarks.

Britain granted Berezovsky asylum in 2003 in a move that was unpopular with the Kremlin.

Berezovsky was a Russian media baron who once had close ties to the Kremlin. He fled Russia in 2000 after a falling out with Putin.
