Russia, U.S. Discuss Israeli Raid On Palestinian Prison

U.S. Secretary Rice agreed with Russia that Israel and the Palestinians must show restraint (file photo) (RFE/RL) March 15, 2006 -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice talked over the telephone today about the Israeli raid on a Palestinian-run prison in the West Bank.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that officials agreed on the "need to see the Palestinians and the Israelis show restraint." They also agreed that the so-called Quartet of international mediators should make an "additional effort" to ease tensions.

Earlier today Moscow had expressed its "profound concern" over the Israeli raid on the Jericho prison.
