Violence Erupts As Kurds Protest At Halabjah Memorial

A memorial to the victims of the 1988 gas attack on the town of Halabjah (file photo) (AFP) March 16, 2006 -- Reports suggest one person was killed and several injured today when hundreds of Kurdish protesters today attacked a ceremony to commemorate a 1988 gas attack in the town of Halabjah.

It is not clear what sparked the unrest, during which shots were fired.

The protesters were demonstrating against government corruption and lack of local services.

Some 5,000 were killed during the chemical attack, which has been blamed on the army of ousted dictator Saddam Hussein.
