June 26, 2006 -- U.S. President George W. Bush today told EU leaders that he understands international concerns about the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba and said he wants to close the center.
Bush said, however, that he said that some detainees at Guantanamo Bay are "cold-blooded killers" who must be brought to justice.
Bush also addressed the standoff over Iran's nuclear program. He said "it is very important for the leadership in Iran to look at the world and say, 'Europe and the United States and Russia and China are united in [the] common desire to make sure that the Iranians do not develop a nuclear weapon.'"
Iran earlier today set an August 22 deadline to respond to a international incentives package to give up uranium enrichment. But Bush renewed calls for Iran to give its answer within "weeks, not months."
Bush also said that North Korea's apparent plans to test-fire a long-range ballistic missile are "disturbing," and called on North Korea to honor agreements it has made to refrain from missile tests.
