The statement said Afghan and coalition forces killed an estimated 45 extremists in the battle in the Panjwayi district of Afghanistan's southern Kandahar Province.

The statement did not give the identity or the country of origin for the two coalition soldiers reported killed in combat.

Coalition forces have for weeks been conducting a military operation in southern Afghanistan aiming to rout Taliban fighters who have been regrouping there.

Meanwhile, Afghan President Hamid Karzai released a statement today calling for more coordination between international forces and local leaders during antiterrorism operations.
