Five Killed In Counterterrorism Raid In Kyrgyzstan


Weapons and leaflets allegedly found in a raid in March on supporters of Hizb ut-Tahrir in the southern Kyrgyz city of Osh (RFE/RL) JALALABAD, July 14, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- Five people were killed and one Kyrgyz police officer was injured during a raid against suspected terrorists in southern Kyrgyzstan.


Oitalbek Osmonov, a spokesman for Kyrgyzstan's National Security Service, told RFE/RL that the men killed were terrorists from a number of banned groups, including the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan and Hizb ut-Tahrir.


He said they had been involved in "several prominent terrorist attacks."


Osmonov said the victims had been planning further terrorist attacks in Kyrgyzstan.
