EU Demands Release Of Belarusian Monitors

(RFE/RL) August 11, 2006 -- The European Union today called for the immediate release of four jailed Belarusian election monitors.

The four were sentenced to up to two years in prison last week on charges of working for an unregistered organization.

The four were working for the U.S.-financed Partnership monitoring organization. They were arrested in February, just weeks before Belarus's presidential elections, which the EU and the United States denounced as undemocratic.
