Rice Warns Against Premature Iraq Pullout

Iraqi police secure the site of an insurgent attack in Ba'qubah on August 29 (epa) August 30, 2006 -- U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says a premature withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq would encourage extremists.

Rice told a convention of U.S. war veterans on August 29 in Salt Lake City, Utah, that the cost of a U.S. failure in Iraq would be "immeasurable."

She said that if the United States leaves Iraq before the Iraqi government is strong enough to secure the country, it would show reformers in the Middle East region that the United States cannot be trusted to keep its promises.
