Russian Hostages Freed At Moscow Prison

(RFE/RL) September 4, 2006 -- Reports say Russian special forces have freed all of the hostages who were seized earlier today by inmates at Moscow prison.

Yury Kalnin, head of Russia's prison service, says none of the hostages was injured.

Correspondents near the prison reported hearing explosions and automatic assault rifles during the rescue operation.

About 40 inmates at the pretrial-detention center in southeast Moscow reportedly took as many as 15 people hostage earlier today -- including the prison warden and at least one staff member.

Russian news agencies report that several people at the prison received knife wounds during an initial riot by the inmates.
