Sochi Olympic Bid Faces Greenpeace Challenge

A children's rally in support of Sochi's Olympic bid in March (official site) September 12, 2006 -- The environmental organization Greenpeace today said it has filed a suit with Russia's Supreme Court to block the construction of a number of sporting facilities and infrastructure around Sochi, which is bidding to host the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Greenpeace said it wants to prevent construction work inside a national park, which it says would breach Russia's environmental protection legislation.

The head of the committee heading Sochi's Olympic bid, Dmitry Chernyshenko, denies Greenpeace's assertions.
