Police said the attack appeared to have been in response to mortar fire on a Sunni neighborhood earlier on November 7 that killed seven people and wounded 25.
In violence in the south of the country, a British soldier was killed when his base in the southern Iraqi city of Al-Basrah came under small-arms fire on November 6.
Britain has 7,000 troops in southern Iraq, which has seen less violence than the center and north of the country.
