Yushchenko Wants Films Translated Into Ukrainian


Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko (file photo) (official site) November 7, 2006 -- Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has asked the prosecutor general to ensure that all foreign films are translated into Ukrainian.


In January, Ukraine's previous government had passed a decree to that effect but movie distributors, who typically buy films in Russia, complained of financial losses, and last month an Appeals Court overturned the order.


Language is a sensitive issue in Ukraine, with Russian heavily spoken in the east and south.
