Russian Fishing Ship Sinks North Of Japan


(RFE/RL) November 16, 2006 -- One sailor is reported dead and another missing after a Russian fishing vessel sank north of the Japanese island of Hokkaido on November 16.


Twelve crewmen were rescued.


Officials say it is not clear what caused the ship to sink.


The boat went down not far from Kunashir Island, over which both Russia and Japan claim sovereignty.
