German Reporter Expelled From Chechnya

(RFE/RL) December 15, 2006 -- Authorities in Chechnya have expelled a German reporter after briefly detaining him on December 14 for allegedly lacking proper accreditation.

Chechen law enforcement officials said the correspondent for German broadcaster Deutsche Welle, identified as Kristof Wanner, was filming in a "zone of counterterrorism operations."

Deutsche Welle's Moscow office said Wanner was filming a report about a German charity helping Chechen refugees and had all the required papers.
