U.S. Energy Secretary Concerned Over Russian Gas Deal

U.S. Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman (official site) May 14, 2007 -- U.S. Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman says a gas pipeline deal signed over the weekend by Russia, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan is "not good for Europe."

Speaking in Paris at a meeting of the International Energy Agency, Bodman said, "Europe needs to diversify its energy sources."

The presidents of Russia, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan on Saturday (May 12) agreed on construction of a pipeline from Turkmenistan to Russia via Kazakhstan. A rival U.S. proposal would have crossed the Caspian.
