Putin Appoints Acting Security Council Head


Igor Ivanov, shown here on a visit to Tehran, tendered his resignation earlier this month (epa) July 18, 2007 -- Russian President Vladimir Putin has accepted the resignation of Igor Ivanov, the secretary of Russia's Security Council, and appointed KGB veteran Valentin Sobolev as acting secretary.


The Kremlin said Putin today signed a decree appointing Sobolev, who has served as deputy secretary of the council since 1999.


Ivanov, a former foreign minister, tendered his resignation earlier this month after serving as its secretary since 2004. No reason for Ivanov's resignation has been announced.
