Russia Launches Satellite To Improve TV Links


Moscow, Jan. 18 (RFE/RL) - Russia has launched its new "Gorizont" satellite from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan in an effort to improve television coverage in parts of Russia.

Space Forces spokesman Sergei Gorbunov said the successful launch was at 10:55 Prague time. He said the Gorizont satellite is the last in a program that began in 1978 and has seen the launching of some 43 probes.
