Balkan Leaders Meeting With Christopher

Geneva, March 18 (RFE/RL) - Balkan leaders of Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia are lunching at this hour with U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher to discuss implementation of the Dayton Peace Accords.

Christopher told reporters earlier today that he will press all three leaders for better compliance with the accords. He said the U.S. would like to see better civil order maintained and more humane treatment of the various ethnic groups in Bosnia.

This afternoon Christopher plans separate talks with Croatian President Franjo Tudjman, Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic and Bosnian acting President Ejup Ganic.

This morning Christopher and the three Balkan Presidents had a joint meeting with representatives of the five-nation contact group. Russia was represented by an observer only, Political Counselor Boris Khabirov from the Russian U.N. mission in Geneva. He did not participate in the talks. Initially Russia had said it was boycotting the conference because it is hosting a similar conference in Moscow on Saturday.
